Take or Wait? Learning Turn-Taking from Multiparty Data

چکیده
We build turn-taking models for autonomous characters in language-based interactions with small groups of children. Two models explore the use of support vector machines given the same multimodal features, but different methods for collecting turn-taking labels.

Computational Models for Multiparty Turn-Taking
We describe a computational framework for modeling and managing turn-taking in openworld spoken dialog systems. We present a representation and methodology for tracking the conversational dynamics in multiparty interactions, making floor control decisions, and rendering these decisions into appropriate behaviors. We show how the approach enables an embodied conversational agent to participate i...
متن کاملMultiparty Turn Taking in Situated Dialog: Study, Lessons, and Directions
We report on an empirical study of a multiparty turn-taking model for physically situated spoken dialog systems. We present subjective and objective performance measures that show how the model, supported with a basic set of sensory competencies and turn-taking policies, can enable interactions with multiple participants in a collaborative task setting. The analysis brings to the fore several p...
متن کاملA Multimodal End-of-Turn Prediction Model: Learning from Parasocial Consensus Sampling
Virtual humans, with realistic behaviors and increasingly humanlike social skills, evoke in users a range of social behaviors normally only seen in human face-to-face interactions. One of the key challenges in creating such virtual humans is giving them human-like conversational skills. Traditional conversational virtual humans usually make turn-taking decisions depending on explicit cues, such...
متن کاملTeacher Wait-Time and Learner Initiation: A Single Case Analysis
The prevailing pattern of classroom interaction is a tripartite exchange structure known as IRF (teacher initiation, student response, teacher follow-up/feedback; Sinclair & Coulthard, 1975). Although it has its own contributions to classroom discourse, it has been criticized on several grounds, particularly for affording minimum learner participation opportunities (Kasper, 2001). An alternativ...
متن کاملIncreasing Operating Room Profits and Decreasing Wait Lists by Use of a Data-Driven Overbooking Model
Background and Objectives: Operating rooms (ORs) are precious resources in hospitals, as they constitute more than 40% of the hospital revenues. As such, surgical cancellations are very costly to hospitals. Same-day surgery cancellations or no-shows were found to be the main contributing factor to underutilization of operating rooms (ORs) in a public-sector hospital despite the ...
